In 2009, the group ventured into a new region of Wales for a retreat. Lake Vyrnwy. There’s a big reservoir there, because it rains a lot.
Here it is … Eunant House.
On the rainiest weekend since the Flood, eight Wrekin Writers enjoyed a productive and fun weekend in sylvan surroundings. Eunant House stands by the Eunant (pronounced Eynant) River, which flows into Lake Vyrnwy, a reservoir dammed 1890-1910 to supply water to Liverpool. The house is only as old as the lake; the original building was demolished when the dam was built and its remains may be seen on the lake bed during periods of drought.
The lake was several feet above normal, and excess water thundered over the spillways. The Eunant river was white, as can be seen from the pictures.
The sunny pictures of Lake Vyrnwy and the straining tower were taken at lunchtime on Saturday 20th November, from the balcony of the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel, which also dates from 1890.
The Retreaters spared time from their writing to indulge in other pursuits. Many of them walked in the rain; two went separately round the lake, a distance of 11 – 13 miles. There was dancing, charades, and a game of Scrabble, which was won by a margin of only 10, though one team had a lead of 100 at one point. And one Retreater had a facial at the Hotel.
The picture of the ruin is not the result of a weekend’s retreating at Eunant House; it is next year’s venue.

The reservoir was full, hence the white water flowing over the top.
That’s a lot of water.
Even more water ….
And more water.
An evening sunset.
The Eunant River in full flow.
More white water.
Even more white water
Even even more white water.
Even even even more white water.
And still it flows.

Ey up – the fire’s alight.
Even more love on this retreat.
Still raining outside.
Which means the waterfalls are in full spate.
Good weather for lichen
This is not next year’s retreat venue!
The water keeps flowing.
Peek a boo!

Has it stopped raining yet?
